Hondour bounded across the grass, a top hat caught in his jaws, seemingly heedless of the shouting voice behind him. A gentleman in full on Edwardian gear ran a few more steps then leaned over, hands on knees, panting deeply and cursing under his breath in pure Scottish. Ahead of him the puppy Pokemon stopped and turned around, wagging his tail in the air. Scrooge took a step and it ran off again.

"Blasted... little... wean...!" Another tired step or two then he decided that discretion was the better part of valor, and gave up for now. Maybe if he stopped chasing the stupid puppy he'd come back on his own. But not without a parting word and a high shaken fist, "That hat cost me two dollars!"

While other trainers nearby seemed to have the good sense not to make things worse, that wasn't not true of a curiously-dressed young woman in the area, gathering berries with a (very big) Pumpkaboo at her side.

"I think your training methods are lacking," she remarked, looking over her shoulder. Then, with a shrug, she turned back to the berry tree and made a feeble attempt to jump up high enough to pick some of the fruit higher on the tree.

His head snapped up and he glared her down. "My trainin' methods are perfectly fine!"

Deciding a difference of attention was in order he walked over, sized up the tree, then picked a cane off his elbow. With a swift smack perpendicular to the trunk he shook it enough to knock some of the fruit down. "He's just a rambunctious rapscallion, is all."

Peridot blinked when she was granted that favor - without evening planning to ask for it! Sure, Earth had shown her kindness, but she still wouldn't have expected a stranger to help her after she made a rude remark. As such, her statement that followed was quiet, and sounded confused.

"Wow, thanks." She shook her head and started to gather the fruit. "Hmm... Pumpkin has an agreeable temperament-"

"Boo!"

"-but then, I'm sure not every one of these Pokemon is like that, and so some are more difficult to train than others. And I'm guessing you're not from here, either, right?"

Most of those she'd met who were native to this place so far - so those out on the Route 29 - were considerably younger than the man she was addressing, after all.

He glanced the Pumpkaboo up and down, then huffed slightly; surely a bit of hard breath from before, of course.

"No, I'm not from here." At movement at the corner of his vision he turned his head and glared, watching Houndour gambol about nearby. "And so far, I'm finding it a bit more... challenging than one might otherwise think."

Then of all things he pulled himself up, tweaking his glasses. "Still, Scrooge McDuck has hardly backed down from a challenge before, and I don't plan on starting now!"

She chuckled softly - Peridot could certainly appreciate tenacity. But as she straightened her stance and started to put the gathered berries in a compartment of her backpack, she deflated some with a sigh.

"Tell me about it. This place isn't bad, it's just... Really strange. Not only do I not have my gem!" Here, she pointed to her forehead. "But hardly anyone even knows what that means!"

"I must confess I've also been drastically changed. But, I'm sorry," another little tweak of the glasses, this time in an interested way, "did you say gem? Do you normally have one worn there?"

She was certainly curious herself, about what might have changed for him, but it's momentarily set aside to answer his question.

"Well, not worn." It would be more accurate to say the rest of her form was usually the accessory, technically speaking. "But more or less, yes! A peridot of remarkable clarity," she explained with clear pride.

"A peridot! My, what a rare gem, especially if it's as pure as you're saying it was. I would have liked to have seen it." Any earlier attitude was gone now, with a bit of a chuckle in his throat. As if responding to the change, Houndour now came trotting back over to him, stubby tail wagging. The puppy was spared a wry smirk as he snatched his hat back and brushed it off.

"Who knows, you may find somethin' like it here." And so may he. The idea was certainly an intriguing one.

Going on the way she blinked in surprise, blushing a little, that statement was meaningful to the young woman. Oh, sure, she was aware of a peridot's rarity on Earth, as a stone! She'd made a point of finding out. Nor was she truly wrapped up in the Homeworld caste system any longer.

Still, the Peridot of the past who had been so eager to impress her Diamond and prove her worth... The remark reached her, and she felt much like a child who had been praised-- And she wasn't sure how to act about it.

"Mmm. I highly doubt it," she muttered, as she eyed the returned Houndour. Then, she looked back to Scrooge with a small smile. "You said your name is Scrooge? I'm Peridot. It's nice to meet you."

He raised an eyebrow, noting he had struck a nerve of some kind. Interesting. Wonder if he would ever learn what that was about?

Well, the proper introduction got a tip of his hat and an honest smile. "Nice to meet you too, Peridot." Just like the gem she mentioned. Wonder about that, too. "Aye, my name is Scrooge, and this," a gesture down, "is Murthly. If one is so curious."

Her smile grew, in turn, and she leaned down to get a little closer to Murthly. "Of course! He's a really cool-looking one, too..." She snickered a little, the sound nasal. Then she stood up straight and patted her Pumpkaboo.

"My partner is great and lovable, too, of course! Her name is Pumpkin."

Peridot with a peridot and a Pumpkaboo named Pumpkin. Then again he didn't have much room to judge! His old horse had been named after his sister rather than something original.

It's up to the reader whether that's a compliment or a curse for either party.

"And what a sizeable pumpkin, at that! You must take good care of her."

Peridot beamed with pride, and once again that unique little laugh of hers sounded off. "Well, Pumpkin was already this size when I got her, but I am an experienced farmer," she explained, pointing to her chest with the thumb of one hand, the other fingers curled up. "I even have experience with other sentient produce!"

A light, almost grandfatherly chuckle. "Then you must be quite at home with tendin' to Pumpkin's needs." He glanced down at his partner, who was pawing at a few blades of grass right now, and making mock bites at them. "Murthly's hardly the first, or even dozenth, dog I've ever owned, though I do admit it's been a while."
